Unlike ordinary intellect (Buddhi), Medha is specifically the power to absorb, retain, and recall spiritual and secular wisdom without distortion. The Medha Suktam is a revered Vedic hymn addressed to Goddess Saraswati and various deities, invoking this divine cognitive power.
The Medha Suktam primarily manifests in two major Vedic recessions:
- Krishna Yajurveda: Found in the Taittiriya Aranyaka (Prapathaka 10, Anuvaka 41-44) and the Mahanarayana Upanishad.

Transliteration: Tvayā juṣṭa ṛṣirbhavati devi tvayā brahmā'gataśrīruta tvayā | Tvayā juṣṭaścitraṁ vindate vasu sā no juṣasva draviṇo na medhe || 2 ||
Meaning: O Goddess! By Your grace, a person becomes a enlightened Seer (Rishi); by Your grace, one attains the knowledge of Brahman and supreme spiritual prosperity. Blessed by You, one obtains manifold treasures of wisdom. O Medha Devi, be pleased with us and grant us true wealth.

मेधां म इंद्रो' ददातु मेधां देवी सर'स्वती ।
मेधां मे' अश्विना'वुभा-वाध'त्तां पुष्क'रस्रजा ॥ ३ ॥
Transliteration: Medhāṁ ma indro dadātu medhāṁ devī sarasvatī | Medhāṁ me aśvināvubhāvādhattāṁ puṣkarasrajā || 3 ||
Meaning: May Lord Indra bestow Medha upon me; may Goddess Saraswati grant me Medha; and may the twin Ashvins, adorned with garlands of lotus flowers, bestow supreme intellectual power upon me.

अप्सरासु' च या मेधा गं'धर्वेषु' च यन्मनः' ।
दैवीं'' मेधा सर'स्वती सा मां'' मेधा सुरभि'र्जुषताग् स्वाहा'' ॥ ४ ॥
Transliteration: Apsarāsu ca yā medhā gandharveṣu ca yanmanaḥ | Daivīṁ medhā sarasvatī sā māṁ medhā surabhirjuṣatāg svāhā || 4 ||
Meaning: The divine retention power present among the Apsaras, and the intellectual brilliant mind found among the Gandharvas—may that celestial, fragrant Medha of Goddess Saraswati favor me. This sacred offering is made into the fire (Svaha).

आमां'' मेधा सुरभि'र्विश्वरू'पा हिर'ण्यवर्णा जग'ती जगम्या ।

Transliteration: Āmāṁ medhā surabhirviśvarūpā hiraṇyavarṇā jagatī jagamyā | Ūrjasvatī payasā pinvamānā sā māṁ medhā supratīkā juṣantām || 5 ||

2. Medha Suktam – Shukla Yajurveda (Chapter 32)
This four-mantra hymn from Shukla Yajurveda is specifically recited during Yajna rituals for mental illumination, administrative acumen, and spiritual strength.
सदसस्पतिमद्भुतं प्रियमिन्द्रस्य काम्यम् ।
सनिं मेधामयासिषं स्वाहा ॥ १ ॥
Translation: I pray to Agni, the protector of the assembly, of wondrous power, beloved of Indra, to grant me wealth, prosperity, and the power of Medha. This sacred oblation is offered (Svaha)!
यां मेधां देवगणाः पितरश्चोपासते ।
तया मामद्य मेधयाऽग्ने मेधाविनं कुरु स्वाहा ॥ २ ॥
Translation: O Agni, make me wise today through that Medha which the hosts of Devas and the Ancestors constantly revere and cherish. This oblation is offered to You!
मेधां मे वरुणो ददातु मेधामग्निः प्रजापतिः ।
मेधामिन्द्रश्च वायुश्च मेधां धाता ददातु मे स्वाहा ॥ ३ ॥
Translation: May Lord Varuna bestow Medha upon me; may Agni and Prajapati bestow Medha upon me; may Indra, Vayu, and Dhata grant me Medha. This oblation is offered to all the Deities!
इदं मे ब्रह्म च क्षत्रं चोभे श्रियमश्नुताम् ।
मयि देवा दधतु श्रियमुत्तमां तस्यै ते स्वाहा ॥ ४ ॥
Translation: May both spiritual power (Brahma) and physical/administrative power (Kshetra) within me enjoy highest prosperity. May the Devas bestow supreme glory upon me. This oblation is offered for that prosperity!

"Whoever recites these twenty-eight holy names of mine early in the morning with devoted faith—even a speech-impaired person—will gain eloquence comparable to Brihaspati (Lord of Speech). Reciting my names acts as a potent Mahamantra; it bestows exceptional wisdom without doubt. One who recites this ten times daily beneath a Sacred Fig (Ashvattha) tree starting from Pushya Nakshatra until the next Pushya Nakshatra completes a purashcharana that cleanses all sins."
